Tom Rather

Thomas Carole Rather, known as Tom or Tommy, died peacefully after a short battle with cancer on Friday morning, July 30 at the age of 80.

Born in Indianapolis, Ind. February 7, 1941, he was a 1959 graduate of Jackson High School in Jackson, Tenn. After graduation, he went on to receive a baccalaureate in Industrial Management from the Tennessee Polytechnic Institute in Cookeville (now known as Tennessee Technological University or Tennessee Tech).

He was a long-time resident of Big Canoe where he and his wife, Toni, made lots of friends and wonderful memories. A sensitive soul, he took solace in walks around Big Canoe, Gibbs Gardens, and riding his Harley Davidson on the mountain roads of North Georgia. He never met a stranger and always wanted to know other people’s stories. He adored his two dogs, Bandit and Cooper, as if they were his kids. He had a long career as an engineer and then became an entrepreneur where he and Toni ran their company Franchise ASAP.

A service will be held Thursday, Aug. 12 at 2 p.m. at Trinity Church.
