Greetings from Big Canoe's very own community radio station.  In keeping with our commitment to provide quality live show entertainment each weekend, the Inside the Gates Radio DJ team also periodically broadcasts mid-week, special artist profiles and we have an excellent one this week on Wednesday, Feb. 10: “The Career and Music of Mark Knopfler.”

Previous shows have featured the Rolling Stones, Beatles, Elton John, the Eagles, Jackson Browne, James Taylor and Joe Walsh just to name a few.  Shiraz Alikhan and Craig Looney split the duties of airing these “deep dive” artist explorations and they are not to be missed.

We have two such shows scheduled for this month.  Craig Looney will present this Wednesday's show featuring Dire Straits founder and frontman, the incredible Mark Knopfler. His body of work extends well beyond the exceptional music of Dire Straits to a brief stint with The Notting Hillbillies, a seriously great solo career, some quite memorable collaboration albums and a lesser-known success of songwriting/recording numerous movie soundtracks.  Shiraz Alikhan will present another Mid-Week Special Artist Show on Wednesday, February 24 featuring the music of Neil Young and you'll want to block out the date for that one.

Mark Knopfler was born in Glasgow, Scotland on August 12, 1949 to an English mother and Hungarian émigré father. His brother David who would go on to join him in Dire Straits was born two years later. With any artist, there are events in life that create the spark, the inspiration to undertake something, a mission.  Those moments can come at any time. In the case of Mark Knopfler the first inspiring moment came in 1955 when at six years of age, he heard an artist by the name of Lonnie Donegan and the music bug bites him hard. Six years of age and the musician seed got planted. How's that for starting at an early age?  The story and the music only gets better.

Described by Classic Rock as a virtuoso, Knopfler is a fingerstyle guitarist and was ranked 27th on Rolling Stone's list of the "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time."As of 2009, he and Dire Straits had sold more than 120 million records. A four-time Grammy Award winner, Knopfler is the recipient of numerous awards, as well as holding three honorary doctorate degrees in music from universities in the United Kingdom. Knopfler was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Dire Straits in 2018.

Please join me this Wednesday at 7 p.m. for what will be a most unexpected journey through the life and music of one of the most revered British musicians of all time.
